Achieving collaboration and independence
- Given that collaboration and interdependence between team member are at the foundation of effective team interpreting, what barriers exist that can impede achieving collaboration and interdependence? I think ego and verification level is a huge stopping point. I think that also the prep time before hand if an interpreter is late or does not arrive on time to the assignment to have enough time to discuss how they want to be feed. I think also flexibility having someone that can work with a variety of personalities.
- In what ways can interpreters break down these barriers to collaboration and interdependence in teaming? I think discussing and being bold to each other. Some people ruin this good reputation of teaming. But if we all work together and talk about the expectations it will go away. I also think workshops and more standard papers letting us know examples of good collaboration and interference. Having more job available with that teaming aspect.
- Choose a metaphor or analogy for team interpreting explain how this metaphor or analogy words and explain why you chose this metaphor analogy. I would like you to use the metaphor when you skip a rock in a lake. You have one person who throws the rock and then it makes a ripple effect. I think that if we had great examples of teaming from the start of the ITP we are going to use that and pass it on. It will get better and people will see that example of that first person and how they did it. Hopeful it’s a good example and not lousy. I think team interpreting needs to research more so hopeful this ripple effect can help inspire someone like that.

Three levels of Collaboration and interdependence
- Think about your person self-talk and what this means for you in terms of being able to work closely with another interpreter in a teaming situation. What is some personal characteristic that you may want to be aware of so that they do not interfere with your teaming work or your ability to process the work? What are some personal characteristic that can benefit you and the team, and your processing of the team’s work? Egos I think is a huge problem. Making sure you are focused on the job getting done right and not how you would interpreter it. Also realizing everyone’s process is so different and we need to be aware of this and recognize it.
- On a scale from 1 to 10 where would you place your tendency to use traditional feedback and where you place your tendency is to the process work? Tradition feedback is more when the topic is harder or I am not familiar with. I tend to process at the start where my process in slow. I am about 5 in the middle. I am trying to make sure I discuss with my team before hand how to receive pricing feeds and what not.
- Nam two or three ways in which you can increase your ability to process with another interpreter? Tell them some experience of good process and not. Discuss with them how you process and what you need to be feed on. Talk to them about their processing and their beliefs as an interpreter.
- Identify two or three models of teams that you tend to use to help frame your discussion about team interpreting? I use discussing the working majority of the time. The jargon, vocabulary, and time change. Also, talk about personal goals and challenges.
