Thought Questions 8.1
How teams work differently
- Think of two very different interpreter who whom you team interpret and describe how you work differently with each of them. One team I have the interpreter is more closed off in her personality. I feel her ego and her confidence too much. It would be great to relate with her more. She is an excellent interpreter and is always ready for the assignment. The other team I want to explain is the same setting as the one above. The interpreter is always feeding me signs. I can relate with her and she is very personable and is very supportive. I feel more open and comfortable with her.
- What aspects of working as a team should be consistent regardless of who the interpreters are? One time, hard working and know the language.
- What aspects of working as a team are the most depended on who the team members are? Court and medical interpreting.
Thought Questions 8.2
Thinking about how teams work differently
- The three teams in the videotape study differ in how they worked as a team. What aspect of these team work are you most likely to incorporate into your own teaming work. I really expect confirmation. I think this is important and well as feeds and collaboration. To figure out how they help me correct and helped me support me. I want to collaborate with them and trust my team.
- What aspects of these teams work are you most likely not to incorporate into your own teaming work? I would say team 2 because it’s the most supportive and added the most confirmation. They provided support for each other. They also knew eachother processes time. THey were both depend on the role but still make sense of each other for emotional support.
- Discuss with an interpreter how these three teams functioned differently, and highlight what you get out of that discussion. They are were so different in tos many way Team one provided the most feeds and the interpreter delayed feed by allowing the lead time to have more process time. This is what I experience through my mentoring. The mentor is just evolved as I am.
Team two was more reluctant in providing corrections or to switch roles but used a lot of collaboration and feeds. Team 3 shared common goal and walked to convey in the TL most of their communication during the interpretation was in written form.
Thought Questions 8.3
Further exploring how teams work differently
- Look back at the last few time you have team interpreted and write down the variables that alter how you worked as a team. Then discuss these variables with another interpret and write your thoughts about the variables affects the team works together. When discussing with my mentor we thought that it was important to feed during the interpretation. We also write down a lot of notes to communicate with each other. My mentor doesn’t give me the good job anymore or does that. She knows I am capable of doing the job. She is great at supporting me and knowing to feed me and when my process is out of time to switch roles.
- Discuss how team determine who will take the lead role in the particular seetin. I think mostly who has worked in that setting. You possible be a new interpreter or haven’t been there for a while. This happens a lot with my mentoring I am always second so I can get the feel of it. I think that is the most important part.
- When is an open taemin process usually employed and when a closed teaming process usually employed? What factors determine when a team uses each of these? Like the last questions is who has been there longer. I guess certification can play a role. The main goal is both interpreters are actively engaged in the process and the job. IT’s not who is best. I think discussing who is first is up to the team and what they decided. Mostly I’m second because I am new and need a feel for it more before I get in the hot seat.
