Chapter 4 – The Pre-Session

Thought Questions 4.1

The pre-session

  • What should teams discuss in a pre-session before teaming together, or at least have mutual agreement/understanding about before teaming together? The pre-assignment session is an ideal time for the team to connect with each other, to reflect on their working relationship, and to anticipate and discuss how they can work together in the upcoming assignments. To talk about the assignment, learn more about each other work and grow trust and confidence in each other.
  • Whare are some areas that may get overlooked in the pre-session? Coming up with strategies with you need to be feed or need to feel your team. Each of this we use in different ways. So when it happens you won’t be surprised.
  • How does the composition of the team members affect the discussion in the pre-session? It takes time. I think it’s important to talk so that you can get to know each other more. Talking about each one will help you get to know each other more.
  • Identify a couple of ways in which team interpreters can establish rapport and “connect” during the pre-session. Just chatting is the best way. To connect with the other interpreters. If you are silent it’s awkward and it seemed like you don’t want to get to know the other interpreter.

Making the most of the pre-session

  • What aspects of the context do you like to discuss with a team  interpreter during the pre-session?  I would talk about how I accept feeds and what helps me. How my processing works.
  • Identify some specific demands from Demand control scheme that you want to be sure to discuss during the pre-session. The environment of where to sit or stand. Paralinguistic if the speaker has an accent or not. Also, video quality to hear or not.

Further exploring the pre-session

  • Identify any areas that were brought up in the videotape study of the survey that you do no tend to discuss in per-session that you perhaps should. Talking about time. 20 or 30 minutes. Also, talking about skills they struggle with.
  • Are there any areas brought up in the videotape study of the survey that you feel need not be discussed in the pre -season? No
  • List specific ways in which the team can discuss each of the four features of an effective team from chapter 3 during the pre-session. A. personal characteristics/skills b. relationship/communication c. philosophy/shed. Commitment.  A. is how they relate to the job. B. How they work with other interpreters that have helped. C. jargon and information about the topic. D. what helps you be a more motivated interpreter. What distracts you.
  • Develop a possible list of topics to cover in the pre-session. Assignment jargon, the demand, and control, talking about how to take feeds if the sentence or word. Shema about the topic. What is hard to voice interpreters like numbers or fingerspelling. Who is going to take what part? Who is the leading the interpreter?
