What is team interpreting?

Define team interpreting in one or two sentences.

 

Team interpreting typically occurs in the situation that is lengthy, or complex in nature involves unique needs of the persons being served or involved special physical or emotional dynamics.

How did the interpreting field conceptualise team interpreting in the early of team interpreting?

 

Team interpreting function has changed since it was introduced in the 1970s in California. They had all day sessions and also legal assignments, the first large-scale use of team interprets. Also, at the time, there was an increased awareness of the quality of interpreting after 30 minutes due to fatigue. Also the awareness of overuse syndrome or repetitive strain injury.  They also would take turns being the “one” interpret who is interpreting and the “off” interpreter who is not.

How does the interpreting field conceptualize team interpreting now? And how does the conceptualization differs from its early conceptualization?

 

The change from the question above today is the “feed” interpret was expected to monitor the “on” interpreter’s interpretation sand feed the missed information and make corrections. This helped how interprets set up their roles as interfering in working in teams.

Making themselves work as one and not two independent practitioners. Then lastly the view of team interpreting change and now it’s interesting as a collaborative and interdependent process. Both interpretings work in partnership on their joint work.

Views of team interpreting

Which of the views of team interpreting discussed here-team interpreting as an independent process, a monitoring process or a collaborative and independent process best represents your view of team interpreting?

Independent process bother interest are present but functionally independently from each other and take turns performing the interpreting task. The goal is not to work cooperatively but to relieving interpreters fatigue. Still taking turns at 20 to 30 minutes.

Monitoring: It changed to this because teams realized they should both share the responsibility for the message. Monitoring  still relieving each other every 20 to 30 minutes but, the “Feed” interpreter was expected to monitor the “on” interpret. This helped alter the interest to be working together.

Collaborating: This is the best teaming method. Bothe team member relieve each other by taking turns producing the target language, they back up each other by monitoring the output, they work interpreter during the wintering work, lastly, they work as a single unit by collaborating and making the same kinds of decision that are made by an interpreter who is working alone. This is a combination of all the teaming methods that have existed. This is the best one. Two interpreters or more working together to accomplish the goal.

Explain what you understand collaboration to mean when it comes to team interpreting: Collaboration means to me the action of working with someone else to produce something. Two people working together is huge. Interpret is not a one man show. They both need to provide effective services.

Explain what you understand interdependence to mean when it comes to team interpreting: Interdependence means you come to the assignment ready for that job. Such as your skills and experiences are ready for that job. During your part of the interpretation, you are knowing the words and doing your job. When you are on the off seat making sure you are involved and not on your phone.

The Field’s View of team Interpreting.

Which of the views of team interpreting discusses here-team interpreted as an interelement process, a monitoring process, or a collaborative and interred process- do you believe best represents the interpreting field overall view of team interpreting? I think collaborating. It takes both interpreted to give-and-take. Collaboration is like a dance in which the interpreters create synergy and it can be amazing work.

Give an example of when a team is collaborating and an example of when a team is working independently. When a team is collaborating it means they are working together to achieve a common goal. They are both actively engaged in the process. They Are supporting each other and feeding each other. Working independently the interpreter would be on their phone and is not supporting the other interpreter.

What are the greatest obstacles to working collaboratively and interdependently? And what can enterprises do to overcome these obstacles? The greatest obstacles are let’s say and interpreter often interprets the assignment and a new interpreter comes in. They are new to the setting and are relying on the other interpreter to fill him or her in on the jargon, background information and the dynamics of the setting. Also working independently that could be easy not to depend on the other person. Independent they have no emotional of work to want to work with the other interpretation of the interpretation, there will be little collaboration.

Thought question 1.4

Defining team interpreting

There were two points in this chapter that I want to exhale is first the difference from a monitor interpreter and collaborating interpreter is huge. We want to work together. We don’t want to just be responsible for errors and correction. The second point was “Teams must be aware of fatigue so that they can produce the best interpretation possible.” This is what teamwork is. I agree with this. Each interpretation can be signed in many different ways. If the interpreter is in monitor mode it will always be wrong. Each interprets visualizes and signs differently.

 

  1. Reading this chapter my view on interpreting has not changed but has supported my definition. Such as support each other and how everyone is actively engaged in the interpretation.
  2. Working in an interpreting team has been altered such as planning.I think communicating before the assignment is just an important and interpreting the message. It helps the interpretation go smoothly and both interpreters expectations and need are met.
  3. If one interpreter wants to work collaborative and interdependent and the other doesn’t what do you do? I think that they need to discuss before they interpreter. The collaborate interpreter will have to adjust some things but not everything. I also think that interpreters should speak what’s right for the client.
